Pirates Keep Dores on their Toes

MHS travelled over to RLS on Friday, October 26th. In order to give the Varsity team a little distance from North Salinas, MHS had to pull a "W." The first half showcased amazing work by forwards Erin Enea and Chelsea Persons. Early in the first half, Roxy Grillo set up an amazing shot on goal, allowing Persons to come in for the kill. The first half belonged to the Lady Dores. With about 10 minutes left in the second half, RLS caught our defense off guard, tying MHS 1-1. Determined to win, RLS put up a fight to the finish, keeping our forwards behind the 50. Overall, an amazing game, perhaps the most competitive all season for Varsity.

The one win for JV this season was against the RLS Pirates. The JV girls felt confident as they entered the field. They girls got off to a great start, scoring in the first five minutes of the game. Maddie Fitz found an opening and was able to make a strong flick for the first goal. The JV Dores owned the first half of the game. Sophmore forward, Audrey Casey, helped secure the second goal off an assist by Rochelle Werner. In the second half, the girls were able to flow through RLS defense, allowing Werner to break away with a goal, bringing the score to 3-0. Late in the second half, RLS found our back door wide open...final score 3-1.

Next game....last league game :( Tuesday, October 30th @ MHS vs. Catalina. Varsity 3:30/ JV 4:30.

See you in the mud!!

Toreadores Shut out Padres

Carmel travelled to Monterey on Tuesday, October 23rd. With North Salinas hot on Monterey's heals for 2nd place in MTAL, the Lady Dores had to continue their winning trend. A scoreless first half put fear into the Lady Dores, realizing even a tie could ruin their chances of a CCS appearance. Maybe Varsity is a second half team, but they were able to put up three goals in the last half. Chelsea Persons scored first, followed by Christina Wood. Dominate as Center Half, Senior Roxy Grillo finally found the back of the net, sealing the 3-0 victory for Monterey.

It has been a tough season for the JV team, going into Tuesday's game 1-6-0. After loosing to Carmel early in the season, 2-1, the JV Dores were motivated to get a "W" at home. Despite a valiant effort by all that played, the JV team pulled a scoreless tie.

Next Game: Friday, October 26th @ RLS- 3:30 Varsity/4:30 JV

See you on the field!

JV Struggles at Los Altos

On October 20th, the JV girls travelled up to Los Altos to compete in their annual JV Tournament. After a strong finish at the Tourney last year, Monterey got bumped up to Pool A matched up with dominate hockey programs such as Live Oak, Leigh and Westmont. The JV team had to fill in the gaps of vital players due to the PSAT exams. Nevertheless, the girls showed up bright and early with high spirits.

The first game against Westmont ended in a 2-0 loss for the JV Dores. The next match against Live Oak seemed to be hopeful. Defensive plays by Kathryn Harkins and Olivia Abanico helped fend off Live Oak from finding the goal cage. However, the Lady Dores ran out of steam, ending 2-0. After a lunch break, the Dores had to face their toughest foe, Leigh High School. Playing on turf changed the flow of MHS, allowing Leigh to get past the midfield...final score 3-0.

Taking 6th place in Pool A, JV Dores were up against the 6th place team of Pool B, Berkeley High. Despite a morning full of frustration, Monterey pulled it together, high spirits and all, ready to score. Monterey dominated the game with more than 15 corner shots. However, the JV Dores were unable to convert the corners into a goal. After regulation play, the scoreless tie resulted in a 7-on-7 sudden death 7 minute play. Again, the Dores dominated Berkeley, but were unable to score. After a scoreless sudden death, the fate of the game was left in the hands of the teams goalie...50 yard sprint. The air was filled with nervous energy as Freshman Isabella Martinez took her stance. Unfortunately, the Berkeley goalie was able to get to the 50 first. It was a long day for the JV team. However, the day showcased their positive attitudes and undying motivation! Great job!!
