JV Struggles at Los Altos

On October 20th, the JV girls travelled up to Los Altos to compete in their annual JV Tournament. After a strong finish at the Tourney last year, Monterey got bumped up to Pool A matched up with dominate hockey programs such as Live Oak, Leigh and Westmont. The JV team had to fill in the gaps of vital players due to the PSAT exams. Nevertheless, the girls showed up bright and early with high spirits.

The first game against Westmont ended in a 2-0 loss for the JV Dores. The next match against Live Oak seemed to be hopeful. Defensive plays by Kathryn Harkins and Olivia Abanico helped fend off Live Oak from finding the goal cage. However, the Lady Dores ran out of steam, ending 2-0. After a lunch break, the Dores had to face their toughest foe, Leigh High School. Playing on turf changed the flow of MHS, allowing Leigh to get past the midfield...final score 3-0.

Taking 6th place in Pool A, JV Dores were up against the 6th place team of Pool B, Berkeley High. Despite a morning full of frustration, Monterey pulled it together, high spirits and all, ready to score. Monterey dominated the game with more than 15 corner shots. However, the JV Dores were unable to convert the corners into a goal. After regulation play, the scoreless tie resulted in a 7-on-7 sudden death 7 minute play. Again, the Dores dominated Berkeley, but were unable to score. After a scoreless sudden death, the fate of the game was left in the hands of the teams goalie...50 yard sprint. The air was filled with nervous energy as Freshman Isabella Martinez took her stance. Unfortunately, the Berkeley goalie was able to get to the 50 first. It was a long day for the JV team. However, the day showcased their positive attitudes and undying motivation! Great job!!
