Varsity Dores Show Potential

Monterey traveled to York on Friday to begin their preseason opening week. The Lady Dores showed promise early on in the game, earning six penalty corners in the first fifteen minutes of the game. York had a tough time stopping the flow of Junior Forward, Laura Weinbrenner and Senior Midi, Domenique Grillo. The "Wein-Grillo" passes proved to be a sure fire way to out smart the York defense. Weinbrenner scored off a penalty corner 18 minutes into the first half. Senior Midi, Emily Grose, answered back with a goal seven minutes after Weinbrenner. York struggled most of the game, failing to break through the Lady Dores' defense of Seniors Kathrn Harkins and Jaque deLeuw, along with Juniors Esther Kim and Jodie Nakajima.
The second half of the game was once again controlled by MHS, with another goal by Weinbrenner and two by Grillo. Junior Christina Wood scored on a solo run down the field, bringing the final score to 6-0. Sophomore Goalie, Taylor Mercurio, replacing All-League Goalie Lauren Crees, had her first save and shutout on Varsity. The pumped up Dores will travel to Carmel Middle to take on the Padres of Carmel High School on Friday at 3:30.

Gilroy Blows up MHS

On Tuesday, September 16th, the Lady Dores trucked up to Gilroy High School to face the Mustangs. This year Gilroy has four national players. Their year round program has grown and proven to be a challenge for the rest of the league.

The JV team faced GHS first. This was the JVs first league game. The game was controlled early on by Gilroy, scoring within the first five minutes of the first half. The rest of the game was all about defense, keeping the score from going above 10. Although the game was in the hands of Gilroy the JV Dores held up and began to flow and move as a team. Goalie Taylor Mercurio had a great defensive game with 6 saves. Final score 0-8.

Varsity hoped to redeem the field for JV. With only two subs (versus GHS 10 subs) the Lady Dores took to the field ready to play an attacking game. The first 15 minutes was a game of cat and mouse. Gilroy passed the ball in the back field, drawing out and exhausting our forwards. Finally, MHS caught on to their strategy and started to spread out and play the ball. Gilroy scored in the first half and continued to dominate offensively. Going into half time, MHS was down 0-4. Goalie Lauren Crees saw more action than she wanted with 11 goal saves at the half. Although Monterey had some great opportunities to score with breakaways by Senior Carrie Creasey and Sophomore Laura Weinbrenner, the Dores were unable to connect. Varsity defense worked overtime with aggressive plays by Junior Kathryn Harkins and Olivia Abanico. Final score 0-9.

Monterey's next match will be a game of redemption against the Padres of Carmel, Friday, September 26th at MHS. Varsity starts at 3:30; JV starts at 4:45.

Monterey Shuts Down York 3-1

The Lady Dores hosted their first home game on the new turf field on Friday, September 12th against York. After their disappointing loss to Carmel, MHS charged the field with the determination and motivation to win their first league game.

Christina Wood started the first half breaking though York's defense with a score. York followed up the score in the middle of the first half. Having many opportunities to score, the Lady Dores were unable to find the back of the net to break the tie until late in the second half. Katie Poma broke the tie and followed up with the winning score. Goalie Lauren Crees had three saves and once again, MHS defense held up keeping York from scoring. Final Score 3-1.

Monterey will travel to face their nemesis, Gilroy High, on Tuesday, September 16th. JV starts at 4:00 and Varsity starts at 5:15 pm.

Lady Dores Fall in Pre-Season Match

On September 10th the Lady Dores travelled to Carmel Middle to face the Padres. In the past, the Dores have dominated Carmel. It looked like MHS would once again defend their winning streak. The first half showcased amazing defense from Olivia Obanico and Jodie Nakajima. Forwards Katie Poma and Laura Weinbrenner had some great breakaways, but were unable to find the back of the net. Going into half time, the score was 0-0. The Padres were consistent, bringing the ball down the field and scoring twice in the last two minutes of the game. Final Score 0-2.

The JV team went on the field hoping to score and bring home a W for MHS. However, they were not able to penetrate the Padres defense. However, there were some great saves from freshman goalie, Taylor Mercurio, who kept the score below five. Final score 0-4.

MHS will host their first league game and first game on the new field on Friday, September 12th. Varsity will start at 3:30; JV will start at 4:45.

Get Your Game Face for CCS!!!

Monterey travelled to Saratoga on November 8th for their first CCS playoff game since 2002. The Lady Dores played an amazing first half, despite an early Saratoga score. At the half, the score was only 1-0. Monterey forwards Erin Enea and Chelsea Persons were able to move into scoring positions several times in the first half, but the Saratoga defense kept them from scoring.

The second half showcased Saratoga's dominate midfield, scoring in the first 17 seconds of the half. The score was 3-0 when Enea broke out on the left side of the field, crossing in front of the goal for the assist off of Sophmore Elise Reidy's post goal. Saratoga answered back with a goal minutes later bringing the score to 4-1. Again, Enea took off down the field for a 50 yard sprint, dodging Saratoga's mids and defense along the way. Enea found Reidy again at the right post, bringing the score to 4-2 with ten minutes to play. Despite an amazing effort from all the girls, Monterey ended their amazing season with an 8-2 loss. Thanks to all the parents that made the trek to Saratoga! Your dedication, support and encouragement this season has been AWESOME!!
